The Tenant Union at the University of Illinois serves University students and incoming students. Identical services are provided for non-students by the Champaign-Urbana Tenant Union in downtown Champaign. Tenant Union at the University of Illinois is funded by SORF - the $12 per semester Student Organization Resource Fee. Students who obtain a SORF refund are not eligible to file a complaint at the Tenant Union or to get any advice or representation from the free Student Legal Services. When would you contact the Tenant Union? Any time you have a problem with a landlord, are looking for housing, or you have a question about renting in Champaign County, Illinois. All service and materials are free. Contact the Tenant Union to:
Your confidentiality will be protected. We will never tell your landlord that you contacted the Tenant Union unless you ask us to contact the landlord on your behalf.
Please do not obtain a S.O.R.F. refund. If you are a University of Illinois student who has obtained a SORF refund, you will not be able to receive free legal representation from Student Legal Services and the Tenant Union will not be able to take your complaint or contact a landlord on your behalf.

You can obtain a lot of valuable information by simply calling the Tenant Union. Answers to many questions can be provided at the time that you call. If you need to speak with someone in person, counselors are available to review your lease, help you write a letter, and discuss your concerns.
The Tenant Union does not provide legal services of any kind. All information provided in this publication is intended to help the average person prevent problems and deal with common concerns of renting. When legal help is needed, always consult with an attorney at law.
